Classification

Employee benefits and compensation, as well as other factors related to employment rights and responsibilities, are determined by the employee’s classification. Employees of The College of New Jersey are categorized by the following classifications:

Classified

Classified employees are governed primarily by the statutes, rules and regulations of the New Jersey Civil Service Commission and by the negotiated agreements covering support staff, physical plant employees and campus police, depending on their titles. As employees of The College of New Jersey, classified employees are also subject to the policies, rules, and regulations promulgated by the Board of Trustees and the administration of the College.  Additional information on the rules governing classified employees, applicable titles, and other pertinent information can be found on the NJ Civil Service website.

Unclassified

Professional staff, librarians and faculty constitute the group of unclassified employees who are represented by a collective negotiations unit. Therefore, their terms and conditions of employment are governed by the statewide-negotiated agreement as well as the policies, rules and regulations promulgated by the Board of Trustees and the administration of the College.

Non-Unit

Non-aligned, unclassified staff consist of managers and administrators who are governed solely by the policies, rules, and regulations promulgated by the Board of Trustees, the administration of the College and the State of New Jersey.

Grant

Temporary, non-aligned, unclassified staff whose positions are funded through a grant or other outside funding source are governed by the policies, rules, and regulations promulgated by the Board of Trustees, the administration of the College and the State of New Jersey, as well as the rules governing their particular grant.

Full-Time/Part-Time

The College determines whether a position is full-time or part-time. Part-time positions are defined as a percentage of full-time and employees in this category are compensated on the basis of the proportion of hours to full time that they work. Part-time employees may be entitled to some of the benefits and may be covered by some of the provisions of relevant collectively negotiated agreements and Civil Service rules, if appropriate.

10-Month

The majority of non-faculty positions at the College are 12-month positions. However, many of the unclassified titles provide for either 10- or 12-month positions. It is solely at the discretion of the College whether to establish a position as a 10- or 12-month position. For 10-month positions that occur from September 1 – June 30, applicable health, dental, and life insurance benefits continue automatically through the summer months during the period of employment. Salaries for 10-month positions are three ranges lower than for analogous 12-month positions and benefits for 10-month positions are prorated accordingly.

Classified to Unclassified

When the position an employee holds is reclassified or the employee is promoted out of a classified title to an unclassified title, the employee is no longer entitled to the rights of a classified employee under New Jersey Statutes Annotated 11 and New Jersey Administrative Code 4A.
